Beware of ‘Alternative’ Hair Loss Remedies

We all love a quick fix, but when it comes to reversing hair loss, numerous clinical studies have revealed that alternative therapies won’t do much to help your hair grow – or, in most cases, do anything at all.

Scientists from Stanford University have looked into past research on more than 20 popular alternative and complementary hair loss remedies to gauge the effectiveness. Although aromatherapy, acupuncture, garlic gel, vitamins D, E and B7, amino acids and curcumin – the main ingredient in turmeric – were not ruled out altogether, there’s not enough evidence to prove they work.

Researchers ruled that there needs to be further investigations into the effects of topical garlic – which is readily available online, touted as a hair oil – and that there was no change in hair growth on study participants who tested topical garlic.

GroMD’s doctor-developed DHT-blocking formula contains only the most scientifically established restorative ingredients – ingredients like argan oil, biotin, caffeine, peptide-rich yeast extract.

Androgenic alopecia (pattern baldness) is one of the most common forms of hair loss in the world, and groMD products have been clinically shown to treat certain forms of alopecia. Yet there are a host of alternative remedies claiming to be able to treat alopecia, with little or no scientific backing whatsoever.

Alternative hair loss remedies like onion juice, garlic gel, multi-vitamins, curcumin and others are marketed as non-prescription alternatives to androgenic alopecia, but no such research demonstrates such a claim.

The lead author of the Stanford study, Beth-Marie Hakings, said: “There are a variety of complementary and alternative medicines on the market for alopecia; however, only a few are backed by strong clinical evidence. Clinicians should be aware of these products, the marketing strategies used to promote said products, expected clinical outcomes, and side effect profiles to ensure accurate patient counseling.”

“In addition, alternative remedies may cause further scalp inflammation, such as irritant or contact dermatitis, leading to more hair loss.”

GroMD is a non-surgical hair restoration option that is designed to strengthen hair and prevent further loss by:

  • Stimulating and prolonging the growth phase of the hair cycle and
